The Library also has space for group meetings
The Center moved into its 5th location in 15 years last fall. It now has a 15-year lease. I have followed it through many of those locations, each which had advantages and problems. Some had more space and some had better visibility for street traffic. This time they have large windows, plenty of space, and free parking across the street.
The Grand Open House was held last month. After several years when the staff only had a suite of offices, it was great to resume operations again. The Center has a wide range of programs for a wide range in ages. It hosts a lot of programs including:
- Transgender
- Gender Discussion Group
- Non-Binary Discussion Group
- Non-Binary Tea Time
- Gender Discussion Group for Family & Friends (via Zoom)
- Youth & Family
- Drop in-Sundays for youth 13 – 18
- Youth Coffee House
- Queer Young Adult Book Club
- Drag Story Hour
- Youth summer camp
- A social for older adults
- Clothing for indigents (walk-ins)
- Health and Wellness
- Yoga
- HIV/STI Testing Services
- NAMI Support Group for LGBT community
- Out Raleigh – the big street fair in June
Following a struggle during the pandemic that about shut down operations, the programs have slowly come back to life. One of the major problems was the lack of a proper facility.
It took several years of fund-raising and a large donation from Cooper TACIA to push it over the top. That was just the beginning of getting a long-term lease on a building downtown with adequate parking. That was followed by a couple of years for a major remodeling.
The unique library is fully back in operation with adequate space. The computer lab still has to be set up, and some things still have yet to come out of boxes. It’s been a busy time moving things from storage and unloading.

Kori Hennessey, Executive Director
The Center is easy to find next to the Lincoln Theater. That has some advantages and disadvantages. The day I was there, a lot of folks were camped out front waiting to buy tickets for a big show.
Director Kori Hennessey says, “I am really excited that the Center is back downtown, and we’re just glad to have this opportunity to be open again and for folks to come in and visit us.” In addition to the Director, the Center has a staff of four.
