OUTSOUTH Queer Film Festival

The big LGBTQ+ event in the Triangle for August is the annual film festival at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Directors and producers of some films will appear in person, and some may take questions following the films. The OUTSOUTH Queer Film Festival (formerly known as the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) runs the weekend of 8/10 - 8/13. The films will be repeated the next week from 8/14 to 8/17. The festival started in 1995. Go to CarolinaTheatre.org. You need to scroll down to get to the festival information.

Tickets are available online and in person at the box office for $14 + taxes & fees. The categories are shorts, drama, documentaries, and comedy. Except for the collections of shorts, the features run about 90 minutes. If you want to get tickets for a specific film for a specific showing, you probably need to get them now. The films will be shown in all three theaters, so tickets for the small ones are the quickest to go. The small ones are accessible via an elevator. Seating is open so there are no reserved seats.

The festival took a break during the Pandemic, and the films were only available for viewing online. They’re back in person now. Plenty of parking is available across the street in the garage for $7. Restaurants are limited on Sunday evening, but drinks & snacks are available in the lobby.

This will be the place to “see and be seen,” and you probably will run into some acquaintances from the Triad as well. You may like to hang out at the fountain between films.
