Raleigh Rose Garden
The third facility build on the former site of the NC State Fairgrounds, the Raleigh Rose Garden is adjacent to the Raleigh Little Theatre and the Stephenson Amphitheater. The RLT was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administrator (WPA) Project, and the garden was officially completed in 1951. The original planting of roses went on from 1948 – 1951. The actual site at one time was a race track. I couldn’t find any explanation of why the race track was built below grade. A detailed history of the garden is on their website.
The current garden is one of three accredited rose gardens in North Carolina and includes 60 rose beds. The North Carolina heat is too strong for roses, so this upcoming fall season is one of the best times to visit. Handicapped access is available as well as various seating arrangements. The grass is not suitable for wheelchairs.
