Is the Major Center of the Triad
Greensboro was settled in the 18th Century by the Quakers. It is near a Revolutionary War Battle at the Guilford Courthouse. After the battle the British withdrew, and the courthouse was moved to Greensboro. The city is named for Major General Nathanael Greene and currently has a population of about 300,000.
The cities of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem make up an area of the Piedmont known at the Triad. The airport is known as the Piedmont-Triad Airport, and the area includes two aircraft manufacturers.
Greensboro’s economy for decades primarily was textiles and tobacco. It also was a major railroad junction point and currently is served by the Amtrak trains Crescent, Carolinian, and Piedmont. The old Southern Train Station has been modernized also to include local and regional bus service called the Depot. The city also is served by I-40, I-85, and I-73.
Greensboro’s Coliseum still serves for major sporting events. For 70 years the city served as the Headquarters of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The city has several educational facilities, including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina AT&T, Bennett College, Guilford College, and the Elon University School of Law.
The former F.W. Woolworth’s store is the site of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. The city was the site of major civil rights demonstrations in 1960, 1962, and 1963. The downtown area also includes the Carolina Theatre, the Blandwood Mansion & Gardens, the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. In addition to the museum, about a dozen galleries are located around town. One of the unique art features of the city is the collection of 75 murals on buildings scattered around town. Most of the downtown area is within walking distance of the train station.
For six decades, Eastern Music Festival (EMF), a nationally recognized classical music festival and summer educational program, has been produced on the campus of Guilford College, UNCG, and other venues in Greensboro.
The showplace of the area is the Grandover Resort and Spa that includes a 36-hole golf course, tennis, professional spa, conference center, and art gallery. The Resort also includes luxury homes surrounding the golf course.
Seven public parks and 100 miles of greenways provide for outdoor recreation. In addition, the Arboretum and Bicentennial Garden offer special facilities. The Haw River State Park has a 3.8-mile trail of the wetlands adjacent to the river. The Greensboro Science Center includes an aquarium, museum, and zoo. Indoor theaters feature laser shows.
