Trump continues not only to maintain a strangle hold on the Republican Party but also on the national news. Everyone was breathless over the fourth set of formal charges against a former President. One case has tentatively been set for a trial date. He ignored the GOP debates, which most people did also. He brags about these charges as badges of honor. He may feel differently when he lands in jail.
One judge has told him to keep his mouth shut so he would not intimidate potential witnesses or limit the search for potential jurors. She probably will formally go ahead and issue a gag order since he can’t keep his mouth shut.
He has lots of company with 18 co-conspirators in the Georgia case. They’re trying to break away from him and from the judge, but no luck so far. Of course, lots of people are speculating that he never will be convicted and will win the election. At this point he seems to be favored at least to win the GOP nomination. The other candidates with a show of hands indicated they would support him even if he is convicted. The debate over the application of the 14th Amendment continues.
The convictions and sentencing of other people involved with the Jan. 6th insurrection continue so that hundreds have already gone to jail. Giuliani lost his libel case, and that’s just the beginning. He claims to be broke.
Unprecedented, bizarre, frightening, a threat to our judicial as well as our electoral system, and an embarrassment to the nation are just a few of the comments about Trump that have echoed around the world. He seems to revel in the insults as long as he is the center of attention.
Who can say where this will end up? He has walked free before during his many appearances in court. When he stiffs his own lawyers, there seems to be no limit. He is like a 4-year-old who enjoys being called a bad boy.
It seems almost a footnote to the politics of the day that the North Carolina General Assembly still has not passed a budget for the next two years. It appears they are trying to stretch out the expansion of Medicaid for as long as they can. The North Carolina DHHS has set up the rules and administration only to scrap them three times. Meanwhile, other basic functions are going unfunded.
