Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the HouseFor a major political party that dominated both Presidential and Congressional elections for much of the past 40 years, the decline has been steep. It started when the political operatives gave up their power and joined the personality cult of Donald Trump. Their fear of his appeal to the base, particularly the most extreme right, came around as the result of several primaries. You had to be MAGA to win a primary, but that also meant that often you lost the general election. Particularly since 2020, his dominance has waned, and his support often resulted in losses.
You would think that they would remember Goldwater in 1964. Apparently, they have forgotten Reagan and the Bushes.
The circus in DC this month over the election of the speaker spoke volumes of the splintering of the party into various factions. It also is telling of how much they will go to extremes to maintain control. They refuse to disavow a serial liar, who his local party in New York have rejected. They’re just that desperate to hang onto every vote.
Republicans always have been more effective in being the opposing party rather than the governing party. Perhaps one of the reasons they oppose government is that they govern so poorly. Attack ads win elections, but they don’t produce legislation.
Don’t get me started on the mountains of debt they have generated. They claim the Democrats are the big spenders, but just look at the budgets for the past 40 years. Eisenhower warned us about the military/industrial complex, but Republicans only can see the multi-billion-dollar contracts and the corporate jobs and profits. Heck, sometimes they even allocate more than the military has asked for.
Mitch McConnell won the 40-year battle to control the Supreme Court and to overturn Roe v. Wade, but it cost him the mid-term elections and control of the Senate.
They are hankering for revenge, and we can expect to see lots of investigations by the House of the Democrats, especially those on the January 6th Committee. Can they impeach Biden? No, they don’t have the votes. But they can spend the next two years creating more chaos just like they did for the four years of the Trump Administration. Hopefully, we won’t lose another million people as a result.
