The Trump Administration through a series of Executive Orders has rapidly started to implement Project 2025. This conservatives’ plan was prepared by the Heritage Foundation with the goal of ultimately removing all legal rights of the LGBTQ+ community. It started with the policy of eliminating all references and staff under the heading: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI.) Although primarily devoted to attacking people of color, it also is being used to stigmatize the LBGTQ+ Community. This is in direct violation of a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Public statements declare that there are only two sexes: male and female so there is no transition possible. Gender identity has been removed from public documents and policies. Transgender people have been removed from the military summarily. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is in the process of being gutted. The Gender Policy Council was dissolved.

More than 563 anti-LGBT bills have been introduced into state legislatures. Not all have been passed into law yet. The majority have been attacks on the Transgender community. The challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the US are even worse in other countries. Examples include Russia, Uganda, Poland, and Hungary. Political and social climates have a serious impact on the mental well-being of youth.

While LGBTQ+ adults largely support protective measures for the Transgender community, most US adults favor laws that restrict the rights of that community.

In the past decade, the number of people self-identifying as LGBTQ+ has grown to 9.3% of the US population. Fortunately, there are advocacy groups supporting LGBTQ+ rights. These include the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Lambda Legal, the Equality Federation, the Human Rights Campaign, and the National LGBTQ Task Force. They engage in legal and advocacy projects and actively work against Project 2025. Most are dependent upon public support for funding. A wide range of national and local support organizations offer services and hotlines to report discrimination and to provide mental health services.

The advances in human, civil, and legal rights in the past 20 years is now being challenged by a backlash from the MAGA politicians and supporters who ran on an anti-LGBTQ campaign. It is too soon to determine the long-term effect of this sudden spark that Trump has set fire, but it is serious.
