Summer Is Almost Over

From the three weeks of drought in June to August when we got 5 - 8 inches of rain, the weather has been in the news. Summer thunderstorms are the norm, but even the tail end of hurricanes can carry a wallop. Hurricanes contribute a significant amount to the annual rainfall total in North Carolina.

It didn't rain last night. It must have been the wind.It didn't rain last night. It must have been the wind.So that’s it for the weather. Politics also contributed to the heat with both national campaigns visiting North Carolina multiple times. That would seem to indicate that the campaigns feel that North Carolina is in play. I wish I could have similar report for in-state races. The local candidates seem to be ignored by the media.

I made my only trip of the summer over to Tennessee in late July to visit relatives. I hadn’t seen them in 6 years! I don’t know where the time goes, but it is a long haul over the mountains. My cousin was celebrating her 65th wedding anniversary. She is about the same age as I am, so who knows if we may be around for the next anniversary.

I didn’t make it to a single Symphony summer concert this year. I’ve become more sensitive to the heat, and June and early July were just too hot. The 98 degrees even kept me from the pool for a few days. It’s not that long a walk to the pool, but I can’t deal with that.

The car insurance adjuster keeps calling me to keep me informed of the status of some of the claims from the February accident. I can’t believe how long this has dragged on, especially considering that most of the claims are fraudulent.

Forklift carrying granite slabs for kitchen sinksForklift carrying granite slabs for kitchen sinksThe most entertaining thing around here is the super forklift hauling cabinets across the apartment complex to be installed in units that are being remodeled. They’ve got granite slabs for kitchen sinks stacked up like cordwood. They tore out the tennis courts and put in pickleball courts earlier this summer. I guess that’s just more in line with trends. We have empty hammocks hanging nearby. I guess that no one want to sleep in the sun. No one uses the pool either. Out of 220 units, most days I am the only one in the pool. It almost seems a little spooky, but it’s nice to have a private pool.

I have struggled to read even a handful of books. I guess that I just made some poor choices that don’t sustain my interest. I even went to the library for the first time in a year to supplement my stock of Kindle books waiting to be read.

PBS-UNC is re-running my favorite Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries again. Last year I watched all three seasons of the 2014 Australian series on Amazon’s Prime Video. I love the camp scenes and the jazz music. The series is mostly a comedy with a few murders thrown in. I can’t recall a single film I’ve seen all summer on Netflix so I can’t offer any reviews.

Well, I guess that at my age no news is good news. I refuse to give an organ recital.
