Brevard Music Center

Considering the many music festivals in North Carolina, this facility tops them all and produces some 80 concerts during the summer. The Center is in Brevard NC, the county seat of Transylvania County. Brevard is located just a few miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway at the entrance to the Pisgah National Forest. The area between Brevard and Cashiers is a high-end mountain resort area with dozens of accessible waterfalls. In addition to the Music Center, Brevard is home to Brevard College and Blue Ridge Community College.

The big attraction at the Music Center is a summer series of classical music concerts held in several auditoriums and concert halls. The setting gives a pleasant ambiance to the concerts. The performances are given by about 400 students at the 6-week Summer Music Institute. Chamber music, theater, and opera performances are held on the campus of Brevard College. In other seasons, the Music Center holds bluegrass and popular music concerts. We were fortunate to attend five seasons of classical music concerts that included outstanding young musicians drawn from all over the country. Although the venue does not draw from major symphony orchestras, such as Tanglewood and Ravinia, the performance level is still outstanding.

The hotel and dining facilities in the small town of about 7,600 are over-run during the summer concert season so make your reservations and tickets for the concerts early since they are likely to sell out. Arrive for the concerts early to avoid the congested traffic on the narrow roads and the limited access to the parking lot.

Nearby attractions include Hendersonville and Chimney Rock. The Music Center is about a 45-minute drive from the Asheville Airport.
